The United States expanded its borders greatly in the 1800s due to different purchases. The Louisiana Purchase in 1803 gave the U.S. much of the Midwest out to the Rocky Mountains. The Texas Annexation of 1845 gave the U.S. Texas and some land above it. The Oregon Territory in 1846 was the result of a treaty with Great Britain that gave the U.S. the states of Washington, Idaho, and Oregon. The Mexican Cession of 1848 gave the U.S. the land from California to New Mexico. The Gadsden Purchase of 1853 gave the U.S. more land in Arizona. The U.S. purchased Alaska from Russia in 1867. Finally, the Hawaii Annexation of 1898 gave the U.S. Hawaii.
