The war of 1812 was caused by escalating tensions between the US and Great Britain. These tensions were caused by Impressionism, the War Hawks growing land hunger, and Tecumseh's united Indian tribes constant attacks on the frontier. It was well known that the British were supplying the Native Americans with weapons, and spurring them to continue attacking.
The seizure of Canada was halted immediately, then Tecumseh was killed in battle and the tribal confederacy was for the most part disbanded. Although a few Native Americans continued fighting alongside the British, there was no united Indian effort. That was the first of the three reasons for the war.
Next the British defeated the French in a much larger war they were fighting at the same time. This put to rest completely impressionism. The third reason for entering the war. However, because of poorly funded, poorly led, and poor spirited troops it turned into a defensive war.
However, fights like the battle at Fort Mchenry, and Jackson slaughtering the British outside of New Orleans led to a major American moral boost. After the war ended because of an apparent stalemate American pride was essentially born. At the time the war was referred to as the Second Revolutionary War. The completion of the war worked as a band aide to heal the wounds that had been created prewar. The relationship between the US and Britain also was greatly effected. It pushed trade in very positive direction, and eventually led to Britain being one of the USclosest allies.
The War of 1812 essentially gave the fledgling US its true independence. The British had been conscripting sailors of ships flying the American Flag. They were removing American citizens without consideration of their independence. President Madison urged Congress to declare war against Britain in retaliation. Though the conscription stopped, the war went on. It lasted nearly three years and resulted in the destruction of Washington, DC.
The major benefit of the war was the true independence of the US.
Just to add to the above information. The Treaty of Ghent, ending the War of 1812, restored British and American relations to what they had been before the war began. While not solving any of the problems that caused the war, the Battle of New Orleans victory, followed by news of the Treaty of Ghent, caused the Americans increased pride and led to a developing nationalism and expansion westward. Armed power was one of the measures of the greatness of a nation in the 19th Century. The US Military had held its own with the British, the most powerful nation on earth. This also gave a feeling of pride in the nation. This increased the feeling of expansion that was taking hold in the US. We now had the west open to settlement.
There are changes in every time period. The War of 1812 influenced the United States in many ways. The major benefit of the war gave the US its true independence. This war was the build up of a "new" generation of leaders. These leaders in turn led the nation to greatness. People like Count Alessandro Volta, who invented the battery, Richard Trevithick, who developed the first steam-powered locomotive, even if it was to heavy and broke the tracks. Also, Humphry David invented the first electric light known as the arc light, and Peter Durand who invented the tin can.
The British had been recruiting sailors of ships that flew the American Flag. They separated American citizens without consideration of their independence. President Madison urged Congress to declare war because of interfered trade , Indian riots, and the fact that British ships killed Americans on their own land. So, war was asked to be declared against Britain in revenge. Though the recruitment stopped, the war went on. Although, the War of 1812 is named for one year, it took nearly 3 years and resulted in the destruction of Washington, DC.
