The first Volkswagen was nicknamed the "beetle" or the "bug" because it's shaped a lot like an insect. Over 40 million have been made since 1938.

In Germany in 1938 Adolf Hitler wanted Germany to have a cheap car for the average person. So he designed a car that looked like a bug in shape. Hitler named the car the Volkswagen type 1 also nicknamed Käfer in german the car is called the peoples car or the wagen of the folk and is nicknamed beetle.
