the motive of the Normandy invasion was to liberate the french from the nazi Germans who had invaded years before
Normandy
The previous landing was at Dieppe approximately 2 years before. This was a disaster for the Allies due to poor planning and no beach reconnaissance.
On June 6, 1944, the Allied troops under General Dwight D. Eisenhower landed on France via airborne and sea based ships. There were British, Canadians, Free French, Americans and other soldiers from others nations, that landed on the Normandy area to liberate France from Germany. It is often called the "Longest Day" as it was the start of the liberation of Western Europe from Germany. Although the Allies did land on the beaches, and did get a landing area on the first day, they did not get as far inland as they thought they would and would have a couple of months of fighting in Normandy, before they finally broke the German defenses and into the rest of France. The Allies also had to bring their only landing docks, (called Mulberrys), as it would be a while before they captured a good landing dock in France.
The Allies set up a fake base so any Nazi spy would think that the invasion would happen in another place than Normandy. Patton really was working with command on the invasion at the base they were going to invade from. The fake base idea worked because the Germans didn't have Normandy beach as well armed as they could have had.

Normandy
The Allies invaded Normandy during World War II. The Allies were composed of the British, the French, and the Americans, but only the Americans and the British invaded Normandy. The Americans actually sent in paratroopers the day before and the paratroopers took out some of the major German guns that were protecting Normandy. The U.S. also dropped fake paratroopers to distract the Germans in a different area. These fake paratroopers were machines that made Machine gun noises and shot fire crackers to make Germans think that they were real people.
the German forces were expecting an allied landing at the Pas de Calais in the summer of 1945 and maintained a strong force in that area. However, the allies made the Germans think the allied invasion would take place at the Pas de Calais area as it was the shortest distance from England to France. But, the allied forces landed at Normandy, France and gained a foot hold in France before the Germans realized they had been tricked, that the allies were not going to invaded at the Pas de Calaids area of France...................

Before. The North African Theater ended in 1943, and Normandy was invaded in 1944.

Rome, ItalyIt was the first Axis capital occupied by the Allies, but Italy had already surrendered in September, 1943, and the Germans had taken over.
so they could get the Germans out of North Africa.

For the invasion of Nazi held Europe to succeed it had to be done rapidly, before the Third Reich could maneuver its forces into place for the most effective defense, and the beaches of Normandy are immediately opposite England, across the channel, and can be reached quite rapidly. They were therefore a good place for an invading force to land. There were lots of other places where the Allies could have attempted a landing, but they would probably have been observed getting into position, and there would have been more time for defenses to be prepared (although as we know, the beaches at Normandy were also defended, and the landing was accomplished at a very high price in human life).
