The name "Emmy" came from the nickname for the television camera tube that was used in early televisions. It was called an image orthicon tube, shortened to "immy." In an effort to build the image of TV programming, the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences decided in 1949 to give out awards, Emmys. A statuette of a winged woman holding an atom was designed as the award.
