They started as a USN aerobatics demonstration team shortly after World War 2, flying Grumman F6F Hellcats. The Blue Angels would shoot down a Japansese Zero as part of their act. [The Zero was actually an SNJ in Japanese markings with smoke and a dummy parachutist.] The Zero shootdown was quickly dropped from the act, but the aeobatics which have made the Blue Angels famous have endured to this day.
