Pearl Harbor, by giving Roosevelt the green light to bring the US directly into World War II, concentrated power in the hands of the federal government. This happens in all wars. No government can wage war without greatly reducing the freedom of its people. After the war, many of the freedoms Americans lost were returned to them. But inevitably the government did not return to its pre-war size. A government grows after every war and crisis. For more information read "Crisis and Leviathan" by Robert Higgs.

Many US naval ships were harbored there and the attack destroyed most of them. Over 2,000 Americans were killed. Those are the direct effects. The next day the US declared war on Japan, and then on Germany. It gave Roosevelt the green light to bring American into World War II. WWII has many, many effects on the US and its people. The war also pulled the united states out of the depression, with the demands of government for tanks and war supplies people were paid for their work and because people were being paid again they were no longer unable to pay for things like bills and food.

The Japanese attack on the Pearl Harbor complex in 1941 served as a a galvanizing factor on the US. Suddenly, amid all the villains and heroes tossed about in the press of the day, Japan stood out clearly as the "Yellow Peril." The Japanese people were consistently and regularly vilified in the US press, and public opinion followed.

The attack on Pearl Harbor also served to alert all the defensive forces along the US west coast. For the remainder of the war, California, Oregon and Washington practiced blackout routines.

It got America involved in the war. We would have stayed neutral longer if Pearl Harbor never got bombed. America and Britain declared war on Japan on December 8,1941 because of it. Germany and I taly would declare war on America later on.
