At first the British saw the conflict as a discipline of the unruly, but after the clash at Concord they decided to bring the colonies in line. At the Battle of Bunker Hill on June 17, 1775 the British launched a frontal assault on the American position on Breed's Hill in an attempt to show how strong well trained troops were against untrained militia. Needless to say it was a failure. They suffered high casualties and the Americans refused to give way until they had used all of their ammunition. The result was that British had to think twice about the American strength and we no longer certain that they could intimidate the colonies.
