Ponyboy and Johnny thought that they accicently set the church on fire by smokeing and dropping it when they were hideing out from the killing of the Soc (Bob). They then went in to save the kids thinking the whole reason was because of them.

No one is completely sure but Ponyboy and Johnny thought that it was maybe the butt of a lit cigarette that started the blaze. It never actually says in the book what the real cause of the fire was.

I'm not too sure, but according to the book, Ponyboy said to Johnny:" We must have dropped a lighted cigarette or something."

I think Dally lit the cigarette when Johnny threw him the pack of cigarettes and that's why they came back to a fire.
