The invention of the cotton gin actually revived a dying slavery demand.
The cotton gin was supposed to help abolish slavery because it takes less people when you have machines. However, with the ability to "shuck" cotton more quickly came the desire for more land for cotton. Unfortunately, slave labor was still needed to pick the cotton, which was now far more abundant, and so there was a sharp increase in slavery following the cotton gin.
Because it enabled the huge growth of the cotton industry, whereby the South became a great cotton empire, able to compete economically with the North, but dependent on slavery.
By making it inexpensive to process cotton, it increased the demand for cotton, which increased the demand for slaves to grow cotton.
Cotton had a major impact on slavery especially after Eli Whitney invented the Cotton Gin. As to Westward expansion farmers bought land in Alabama and Mississippi on which to farm cotton.
