Well, as for physical advances I' not sure. But I do know that during their travels, crusaders witnessed many marvels, such as temples and great cities. After the crusades, the people of Europe were moved and captivated by what the crusaders had seen, which greatly(if not entirely) influenced the Renaissance.
The Crusades, and there were many of them in the Middle Ages, meant to keep the Holy Land, a Christian stronghold. It's great distance from Europe however, left it to Islamic peoples to dominate Jerusalem, as one example.
