Multiple sclerosis means "many scars." This name comes from the pathology of the disease, where nerve cells are attacked by the immune system. T-cells will destroy the myelin sheath surrounding nerve cells, leaving hard, plaque-like regions called scleroses.
MS is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks the body's nerve cells, destroying the myelin shealth surrounding the nerve fiber. In its place, hard, plaque-like scars form, called "scleroses".
Thus the term "Multiple Sclerosis", or "many scars".
Multiple Sclerosis is the scientific name. MS causes many scars on the tissues of the nervous system, and so the name Multiple Sclerosis. The word sclerosis is derived from the Greek word skleros, which means hard.
