The US had one constant Westward expansion. It was settled from the East coast westward. Jackson went west when he a young man, moving from near the coast of NC to Nashville , in western TN. When he put Florida under US control, the Spanish ceded all their claims westward to the Pacific, giving the US claim to California and much of Texas.

After Texas rebelled from Mexico, to which the Spanish had granted independence, he

campaigned to make admit Texas as a state.
