by elongating the workday, muscling out unions so factory owners could pay lower wages and not have to worry about child slavery, safety issues and hygiene concerns. it also helped improve productivity and profit by the fact that there was no longer a need for skilled labor, just someone smart enough to stand next to unsafe equipment and do the same mundane task over and over and over. It also provided a work environment for poor orphans who could afford an education!
