The character did not actually die- but he did fix it so that he was not Superman anymore. Superman exposed himself to gold kryptonite and it took away all of his powers. Years later he was living life as a normal man who had renamed himself Jordan Elliot (reference to his natural father Jor-El) working as a mechanic. He was married to Lois Lane and they had a son named Jonathan Kent Elliot (named after Clark Kent's adoptive father) who was learning to use the powers his father once had.
