Light, cutting through the darkness that covered the rotating earth.

The first ray of sunlight that pierced the darkness was the beginning of all the seemingly endless and repeated "24-hour" days since. The sun [light] rising in the east, setting in the west, and rising again in the east 24-hours later.

"...God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. And the evening [the Night portion] and the morning [the Light portion] were the first[twenty-four hour] day." (Gen.1:5)

"...the evening [Night] and the morning [Day] were the second day." (verse 8)

"...and... the third day." (verse 13)

"...and... the fourth day." (verse 19)

"...and... the fifth day." (verse 23) -- etc.

It became a day with "Light" -- because: "...darkness was upon the face of the deep..." (verse 2), before that.
