In many of the same ways that history shows other island nations being formed and shaped.

Islanders are by their geographic make up loners and isolated. Japan for decades was as xenophobic as a nations can be. They tried with some early success to control contact with foreign countries and their ideas. The US finally rested THAT from them and forced contact on them.

But old ingrained ideas die hard, and Japan society is still somewhat isolated and xenophobic.

Japan also was never able to keep and maintain any foreign settlements.

The geography of Japan, being an island nation with mountainous terrain, influenced Japanese civilization in various ways such as limiting agricultural land, promoting isolation and cultural distinctiveness, and fostering a strong maritime culture due to reliance on the sea for resources and trade. The geography also contributed to the development of Japan's unique architecture, art, and religious beliefs.
