There was a inflation so the goods were scarce. It also became a boomtown.
The most important result of the California Gold Rush was probably the increase in population it caused in California. Before the rush, San Francisco was a village of 500 with a nice harbor. The gold rush made it into a city. Other towns and cities were founded at the same time, and California became a state less than three years after the gold rush started.
The four major cities in the Gold Rush Era were Sacramento, Modesto, San Francisco and Stockton. The Gold Rush Era lasted 1848 to 1855.

The gold rush!
san francisco?!
San Francisco was the port and jumping off point to the route to Sacramento. The gold camps were above Sacramento so ships docked and people took the Sacramento River up to Sacramento. San Francisco was a Spanish settlement at first and the gold rush changed it into a wild open city of bars, sailors, gold seekers, prostitutes, and gangs. People bought supplies there and moved on to seek gold, but some stayed and the city grew. Ships were abandoned in the bay as the passengers and crew left for gold. Large banks came to the city to handle the gold and business grew. As the state grew so did San Francisco.
