You are talking about the harsh winter of 1777-78. The men were already sick and tired. The Army was low on food, medicine, clothing, boots/shoes, blankets, etc. The British troops took over private homes of colonists in Philadelphia. George Washington took his men to Valley Forge, PA, about 20 miles from the British. Valley Forge had log cabins where men slept side by side in bunks atop each other, with very little heat. If one man got sick, that man infected many others; many died from illness and starvation. About 1/4 of the 12,000 men who were at Valley Forge at the beginning of winter died before spring arrived. December 12, 1777: "We were order'd to march over the river - It snows - I'm sick - eat nothing - no whisky - no forage - Lord - Lord - Lord." -- The diary of Albigence Waldo.
