Spartans needed to be able to keep helots at bay
Sparta had a limited number of the armoured infantry (hoplites) which was progressively eroded in battles over 100 years faster than they could breed replacements. They began to use their helots (serfs) to replace the losses, but they were not the same quality heavy infantry, so after the losses of a defeated by Thebes at Leuctra in 371 BCE Sparta could no longer raise a credible army. Although Thebes and Athens were later over-run by Macedonia, Sparta just didn't have the numbers to make a comeback.
Sparta had no walls, relying on it's warriors as its walls.

All did, for survival. Sparta was exclusively devoted to it.
Sparta's military was only Spartan Citizens and had almost no archers. The training began at age 6 when a boy was taken from his mother and pressed into a harsh military school where they were regularly beaten and starved encourging strentgh, loyalty, and taking what you need. Spartan boys often stole from Helots, which were spartan slaves, to get food. When they were ready they went into the mountains and had to survive for 10 days to a month, with only a adult Spartan there to make sure he didnt cheat, abnd mabye another boy. Greeks were a lot less physical in their training. They were a sign up army. Often boys washed out from cities because tehy weren't use to the training. And the training was not as tough.
the landforms that make sparta
Sparta had seized the land of the southern Peloponnese peninsula and turned its people into serfs who gave half their produce to Sparta, which allowed them to concentrate on military training to be able to protect their city-state. Athenians had to farm their own land or make a living through fishing, trade etc, and do their military training in their spare time.
Sparta became temporarily the dominant power in mainland Greece. However the war had cost them a substantial loss of their citizens who made up the warrior class, and after a war with Thebes over 30 years later, their military strength had dwindled to a level where it ceased to be a major player in Greek affairs.
Sparta was first and foremost a military organization. The arts were not particularly valued since they distracted from military training. Their society was focused on supporting the full-time soldiers who were at the top of the social heap. Culture and religion were taken from the rest of the Greek cities.
