According to the book of Esther, Queen Vashti was executed after she refused to come in front of the Persian King Achashverosh. Once Vashti was executed, the king needed a new wife. Achashverosh had all of the beautiful unmarried women in the country brought to the palace to participate in a beauty pageant during which he chose Esther to be his new bride.

However, Esther wasn't chosen because she was the most beautiful. Prior to the pageant, all of the women were offered their choice of jewels, clothing, and beauty treatments. Esther though, didn't ask for anything and it was her modesty and inner beauty that caused the king to choose her.
