The league tried to stop wars peacefully so they hoped to solve disputes by talking and discussing it with thearguing countries. Also if a war broke out all the other nations in the league would stop trading with the invading country to try and untill a lack of suplies brought the war to an end.

The follow up organization, the United Nations, has not prevented all wars since 1945, but, it was there to defend South Korea, when it was invaded in 1950. It has done a lot of good, and helped to prevent WWIII. Considering what the UN has and has not done since the end of WWII, I think that the League of Nations might have worked, if it had been given a chance.
The league of nations failed in Abyssinia because it was too weak and frightened of Italy to stand up against Italy. the league was frightened if they upset Italy's prime minister Benito Mussolini, that he may not help the league if Hilter were to attck again, so they basically let Italy do what they wanted because the the league was weak and defenseless.
