Briefly, Modernists experimented with literature by using techniques such as Deconstruction, post modernism, feminist and gender theories, and experimentation with aesthetic, and phonetic forms. Prior to these experiments, many literary works were under the influence of rules and regulations of proper literary forms, for example women were either to write as a man, or about their assumed housewife roles. Critics like Cixous pointed out these flaws in the literary forms, commenting that literature was becoming a phallocentric and excluded the women from writing in their own forms. Deconstruction helped break down the assumed forms of poetry and writing styles, and by experimenting with breaking down the assumes phonetic and literary forms, modernists were able to revive literature by deconstruction the boundaries and working with the binaries of the works.

Modernist literature experimented with form by breaking traditional narrative structures, incorporating stream of consciousness techniques, and playing with time and perspective. Authors such as James Joyce, Virginia Woolf, and T.S. Eliot used these techniques to reflect the fragmented, uncertain nature of modern life.
