When God promised His people (the Jews) that he would send a messiah to be their king they may have been waiting for an actual king, with wealth and power befitting a king of the time. What they got was a messiah born into a poor working class family, without money or power. That's why they didn't recognize him for what He really was. But His life was the perfect example of humility, meant to show us how to live according to God's law.
