Imagine that you are in almost complete darkness, surrounded by dozens of men in the same position as you. It's stuffy, and you are about to ambush a city that has repelled all attacks so far, so you (and everyone else) are sweating. You in a time of no toothbrushes or toothpaste, or any kind of real dental care, so everyone has bad breath. Also, none of you have washed in weeks, probably months. Additionally, you have no idea whether or not you'll be discovered and slaughtered before you can even get out of the horse. It's also moving, so you are all bumping into each other constantly. Sweat, grime, halitosis, maybe a few open wounds, and the painful realization that you might die very soon. Sounds fun, doesn't it?
