∙ 14y agoPeople believed that the plague was spread through 'bad smells'. They would wear a suit fitteed with a 'beak' full of herbs so as to ward off the bad smells. They would also light fires so as to ward off the bad smells. This was entirely contradictory to their aims as the lighting of fires only attracted the plague carrying fleas towards the fires.
