Because there was lots of fleas who had the bubonic disease and the fleas lived on the rats then the rats all got killed (in Britain) because everytime a flea bit a rat the rat would die and the fleas were getting hungry so they moved on to humans. The streets were used as sewers in the towns as many people were very poor back then so it attracted alot of rats with the fleas. and when the fleas started to bite people they started to die. The plague stopped in Gravesend Kent which is why it is called gravesend. or so that's what i got told! Hope this helps
