The resources available made the difference in the newer invenstigation. At the time of the Jack the ripper murders, organised criminal investigation was in its infancy. The detectives in the Yorkshire Ripper case had the use of computers and all the apparatus of modern technology to help them althought there was some sloppy handling the information gathered.

It was through the vigilance of an ordinary beat policeman, not a detective, that Sutcliffe was finally caught, when he checked the registration details of a suspcious-looking car and was challenged by Sutcliffe. This policeman was aware of the information gathered and was on the look out.
