After Islam began in the 600s, life for women actually improved in contrast to other societies of the time. The Qur'an declared the equality of men and women before Allah. It allowed women to control their personal money and property after marriage and also declared the man's obligation to provide for his wife. Women were in charge of the children and the home.

Cultures and traditions are the 1st factor affecting women's status in Muslim society, if you look through every Muslim country, you'll find wom en act and ress differently, the best and decent way of dressing was expressed in religion by three words: not exposing the body (ie, covering the whole body except face and hands), not showing the body contour, and not remarkable.

within these three conditions, you will find Muslim women dress by various ways, some may exaggerate, some may reduce, and dressing is still a point of debate in some society.

Regarding other issues, Islam gave women the full rights to work, inherit, have her own possesseions and decisions within what she owns.

Gave her the right of marrying herself by referring to the state judge if her father hinders her from marrying a decent person, and the right of divorce, or "Khulaa" when divorce is not obtainable.

You will find also that some of these rights are not fully obtained, due to cultures in the 1st place. Some cultures were forced by the colonizers who deeply affected cultures in the countries they occupied.
