In Roman society, gladiators had a paradoxal status. They were slaves and the scum of the earth, yet they were admired and worshipped at the same time. The more scarred a gladiator was, the more popular he was. As an example, vials of gladiator sweat were sold as an aphrodisiac.

The public probably viewed gladiators as people with no value to their lives. God would not want us to fight animals and kill them or be killed so He probably thinks along with us that they had no value to their lives.

The Roman public had various views of the gladiators, just as we have various views of say, football or boxing. Some detested the sport, others were great fans of the combats. Many gladiators were courted by wealthy women. They have been described as the rock stars of antiquity. The emperors Nero and Commodus had gladiators as their personal friends.
