There were actually two revolutions in Russia in the same year, 1917.The first was fought because the Czar refused to pass reforms to help the people, give the people representation and pull Russia out of the war that was destroying farmland and Russian lives. The second was because the Provisional Government also didn't pass the reforms and pull Russia from the war.

Still despite all of this the tsar continued to send troops to certain deaths in a war that was not winnable and did not have complete popular support.
