From the days of the stagecoach in the American West. Robbing a stagecoach was a favorite target of criminals at that time. The driver had all of his skills busy with driving the team, and a man usually rode along side him with a shotgun to "discourage" approaching desperadoes. Today, the term merely means "someone going along for the ride".
