In the early years of exploration, the only way to reach distant territories was to first arrive by ship, if the location was near a port, and then, having arrived, proceed on foot or on horseback to wherever you were going. That is what occurred in Pennsylvania, when the Dutch, and then the British (especially the Quakers) created settlements in the region. There were no trains yet, so all expeditions over land occurred either by walking long distances or riding there on one's horse.
