In America there was 11 free states and 11 slave states, before the compromise.
The Union in the American Civil War represented the free states (meaning slave-free states) plus five border slave states in the north of America. The Confederate States of America (the Confederacy) comprised the eleven southern slave states which had seceded from the United States of America.
Texas was a slave state and not a free state. Quoting Wikipedia - "A slave state, Texas declared its secession from the United States in early 1861, joining the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War."
in 1768. In 1868 with the ratification of the 14th amendment to the United States Constitution.
Because the Declaration of Independence said that every man in America was free.
free-man, free-woman
this is an imaginary line that separates the northern (free) states from the southern (slave) states in America...
Slave
This caused a debate since at the time, America had a balanced amount of slave states and free states. If Missouri was admitted into a slave state, it would tip the balance. Thus, Henry Clay developed the Missouri Compromise, Allowing Maine as a free state+ Missouri as slave, keeeping the balance in check.
