Very simple clothing. Women had a shirt, a blouse and no shoes. Men a pair of pants and top and no shoes. They were lucky to get a coat or any extra clothing. Most had one of each and nothing more. The planter was out to make a profit and wanted to save money so they gave the slaves as little as possible.

In the book To Be a Slave former slaves were interviewed in the 1930's before too many had died. According to the people who had been slaves the men had one cotton pair of pants and a shirt. No shoes and if they were lucky a hat or coat. Women had a cotton dress. House slaves faired much better than field slaves since many got castoff clothing. Children until about 2 years old didn't have clothing and young children pants, shirt for boys and a cotton slip type dress for girls.
