German troops were unable to maintain sufficient supplies.
During World War II, on the Eastern Front, the "scorched earth" policy of the Soviet Union, which amounted to the destruction of facilities and resources and anything of possible value to the invaders as the Soviet troops retreated, affected Germany's invading forces in numerous negative ways. Among the most important were the following: supply of their troops was made more difficult; forward movement was hampered by the need to build new bridges and repair roads; and shelter during inclement weather (especially during the winter months) was scarce, which wore down the fighting effectiveness of the German troops.
A marching army far from home depends on local sources of food and other necessities from the conquered areas. The scorched earth policy meant that nothing was left behind by the retreating forces that would help the Germans. The Germans therefore needed supplies from behind their lines which slowed their ability to move forward.
German troops were un able to maintain sufficent supplies
This was a "Terrain Denial" tactic where crops and living quarters are denied to an enemy .

Russia is very large and the Russian Army kept falling back which extended the supply lines and made them easy to attack by Cossacks operating in the rear. Troops were kept from the front to defend and escort the supplies and all of this time the Russians employed a scorched earth policy to further weaken Napoleon's force who had to forage far and wide for food and fodder.
Napoleon's troops were not equipped for winter traveling and the soldiers faced frostbite and starvation
Russsia's huge and if the Russian burn everything that could supply the invaders, those invaders had to carry everything with them and that is difficult.

The Soviet Union used the scorched earth policy to deprive the Germans of food and ammunition. The Nazis had a long supply line and with Germany having a battle on both the eastern and western fronts, there was little food to be had. It was easier for the Soviets to pick off the starving Nazi soldiers.
