There was a prevalent feeling among American colonists that they were being unfairly exploited by the colonial power, Great Britain. Since the British Empire was based on monarchy, it was felt that democracy would be a plausible alternative, although at the time it democracy was also believed to be highly experimental in nature, not having a proven track record.

∙ 6y agoIt didn’t. The people thought of themselves as English and loyal to the king. Even durning the revolution there was a percentage of people who never became involved. The colonists were 90% farmers and live in rural areas. The men pushing for independence were the most educated richest men in the colonies. Jefferson was only 32 years old when he wrote the Declaration of Independence and he didn’t want to do it. Using the philosophy of john Locke he made a revolutionary statement that god gave man the right to choose his government. This was treason and set the stage for a revolution.
