Even under British rule, Canada was called Canada. Even before it was united from coast to coast, there were two colonies called Upper and Lower Canada.
The British empire invaded Canada so as to make it part of its empire. Canada did not want this and they stayed under the British rule up to 1817.
Most (all?) of the countries or colonies that formed the British Empire (of which Canada was one) did not need to go to war to obtain home rule/ independence. The British Empire was developed from a democratic country and when colonised people became educated enough ask for their own rule, Britain could hardly refuse. Canada was not completely independent from great Britain, but now a central government would run the country. Canadians would elect their own leaders.
Most of Canada's modern regions are of British descent. One way you can tell is by the architecture of buildings in Canada. 80% fo Canada's population speaks English. Victoria, British Columbiaa, has lots of flowers in the town just like London, United kingdom. The British flag along with most of the province's flags have Union Jacks on them. Canada uses the same spellings the british people use, and have Queen Victoria on their money.
Canada was a source of conflict for the British. They have fought in wars all over the world, but had signed a peace treaty in 1713.
Canada never really "joined" the British Empire. Rather the reverse, the British Empire acquired Canada in pieces, with no volition on the part of Canadians, either the original native inhabitants, or the contingent of New France settlers in the 18th century, whom the British conquered and occupied. Just as the United States was once a part of the British Empire, which was not a conscious act. The difference being that the United States separated from the Empire, in a revolution, whereas Canada more or less evolved as a distinct and sovereign country. And even the Empire evolved, world wide, into the Commonwealth of Nations, sharing the monarch, but really nothing else.
With authority.
Many small Countries and Canada Canada is not under British rule. It is independent. All territories still under British rule are very small.
