Before the telephone, people would:

  • send a child to deliver a message
  • walk to the other place to give the message yourself
  • drive to the other location in a wagon or by horse
  • travel to the Telegraph Office to send a long distance message
  • place an ad in the local newspaper
  • send a post office letter and wait weeks to months for a reply

After the telephone, people shared exchanges, like "Baldwin 456". No telephone numbers existed. One "line" carried everyone in that area, a party line. So you had to wait your turn. But-- you could get almost immediate communication-- unless Uncle Joe didn't have a phone or didn't have an outside ringer for when he was in the outhouse or barn.
