The most difficult problem Grant faced was finding a way to outflank the city. After having two direct assaults repulsed, he took a circuitous route by crossing to the far side of the river and marching his troops to a point well below the city before recrossing and coming up on the enemy's rear. Failing to take the city by storm again, he bombarded and starved it into submission.

The Union wanted to cut off all supply lines such as water and rail lines. Grant wanted to attack the heart of Mississippi thinking it will weaken the South. But he was ordered to link up with Don Buell, another Union General, at the Memphis and Charleston Railroad. I hope this helps anyone and I hope I gave a decent enough description of the Union's strategy.

In the Civil War, there really was no battle as such. The city surrendered after a naval bombardment.

In the War of 1812, Jackson's forces sheltered behind cotton bales and fired at the British who were marching in the open.

Soon after Shiloh the Federals carried on their advance southward to capture Corinth, which was then abandoned by the Confederates, thus extending the control of the Mississippi River to the height of Memphis in cooperation with the Union gunboats.

Furthermore, the death of Albert Sydney Johnston, killed during the battle, deprived the Confederacy of its most able general of the moment.
