The overall Japanese plan was very complicated. They were attacking in five widely separated areas, and all were to commence just as soon as the attack on Hawaii was under way. These included the naval air attack on Hawaii, an invasion of the Philippines, two invasions in southeast Asia, and an attack on Wake Island. Wake Island was a US possession and, unlike Hawaii, the Japanese intended to land troops and capture and hold the island. But their initial attack was repulsed by the Marine Defense Battalion on Wake. Part of the task force returning from Hawaii was diverted to support a renewed effort to capture Wake Island.
Wake Island is a US territory, I think.
There are no indigenous natives on Wake Island and the US military and civilian contractors maintaing the island is usually less than 200.
Wake Island does not have a telephone country code, because there are no direct-dialable telephones there. All telephone access to Wake Island is handled by the US Air Force through a special operator in Hawaii.
The full story is long and complicated, but in early 1942 Wake Island was defended by US Marine soldiers and a squadron of Marine F4F Wildcat fighters. Although Wake was too close to Japan for comfort, and it received little support from the US, the island put up a heroic defense before it was captured. The story of Wake Island was made into a film in the same year.
On December 10, 1898 was when America acquired Wake Island as a territory.
