Unwillingly. The original paln was to bypass Paris, chase the retreating Germans to the Rhine, cross and finish the war. The Free French under de Gaulle, however, saw the liberation of Paris as a priprity, and this, couples with actual Resistance risings inside the city, caused the plan to be changed. (The Allies has already been horrified by the Russian refusal to aid the Warsaw rising.) As a result, Paris was liberated jointly by the US and the Free French, the allied armies ran out of fuel for their vehicles before reaching the Rhine, and the war went on for months longer. As for 'saving' Paris, that was done by the Germans - at least, by the refusal of the German commandant to obey Hitler's order and burn the city to the ground.
