He could pass any laws without verification from the Reichstag - if he deemed it an emergency. Inevitably, Hitler abused this power and took absolute control.

What movement did Hitler use to rise to power?

Hitler had three main steps to power. The first was his moves to become head of the Nationalist Socialist (NAZI) Party of Germany following his return from WWI. Once he had actually found the party with which he so identified, he was able to become the head of it within a year. The second move was to take over the existing German government, called the Wiemar Republic after what was then the capital city. He did this through a series of tricky moves. First, he managed to get his party a majority in the version of US Congress that the Germans had at that point. Once his party had that position, he was supposed to become the emperor's chancellor, but he refused that position, causing a crisis. When the emperor asked him again to become the chancellor, Hitler said that he would only take the job if the emperor stepped down. Seeing the righting on the wall, the emperor stepped down from his position in 1933, the same year that US President FDR was inaugurated, although it was a decade before they clashed. The third and last move that Hitler did to get his power was to build the military. This was illegal according to the Versailles Treaty, which had ended WWI. However, because everyone remembered the horror of that war, no one condemned Hitler for it, for fear of sparking another. It was during this time that Hitler and his puppet Mussolini of Italy began their revolution in Spain. Although they had little political interest there, they were able to use that war to hone their battle tactics. After this war, Hitler felt ready to begin his conquest of the world for his German Reich, which he claimed would last a thousand years. It lasted only twelve.

How did Adolf Hitler create a one party state?

Hitler banned the Communists, encouraged Conservatives and Nationalists to join him and 'encouraged' Liberals, Centrists and Social Democrats to keep quiet. edit (codnchips4u) Hitler became the chancellor in January 1933; he was working closely with Hindenburg but had no real power. Although he had 2 other Nazis in the cabinet he could be sacked at any time. Also at this point, Hitler didn't have a majority in the Reichstag and had to bring in help from elsewhere. On the first of February Hitler managed to convince Hindenburg to have new elections in the Reichstag, this gave Hitler to gain the majority he needed to change the Weimar constitution. On the 27th of February 1933 the Reichstag is burnt down. A Dutch communist was found at the scene with fire starting equipment. Hitler used the opportunity and blamed the communists and showed everyone how dangerous they were and by the next day 4,000 communists had been arrested. The next day Hindenburg issued the decree for the protection of people and the state. This meant Hitler could arrest anyone he wanted without trial. Hindenburg said it was to protect from the KPD (the communists). After the fire they hosted the election on the 5th of March. The Nazis gained 288 seats but they didn't get the 2/3rds majority they needed to issue the "enabling act". Hitler then tried to brainwash the German people by appointing Goebbels as head of the ministry for public enlightenment and propaganda so he could have total control over the media. Hitler continued with his "brainwashing" by taking all the "alien elements" out of the education system like Jews and non Nazi supporters. Hitler organised the day of Potsdam which celebrated the opening of the new Reichstag, this was intended to win over more conservative supporters and more importantly the centre part and the army. After wards Hitler joined with the nationalist party to get his 2/3rds majority, he then passed the enabling act granting him emergency powers so he could rule Germany without consulting the Reichstag for 4 years. On the 14th of July Hitler passed a law on the formation of new political parties. So this stopped other parties from being formed so Germany became a one party state run by the Nazis. Hitler also realised that the church had a lot of power over the German people and could have great influence so he formed an alliance with the Catholic Church and said he wouldn't interfere with them if they didn't interfere with political activity. On the 30th of June Hitler organised the assassination of a claimed 70 SA members but others predict there was about 400 deaths that night. Hitler realised that Rohm had a lot of power and with a lot of loyal supporters but he couldn't just arrest him without losing support of the SA so he murdered the top SA leaders and accused them of treason. Two days later Hindenburg died and Hitler appointed himself president of Germany and merges chancellor and president into the same role of 'Fuher' this is when Germany became a dictatorship and Hitler made the army swear an oath that they would serve him and only him.

Why did Hitler rearm Rhineland?

Hitler probably wanted to see how far he could go. France and Britain were to afraid to confront him about anything he did and were avoiding conflict at all costs. They appeased to Hitler, and he no longer thought that they were going to confront him about anything. He probably wanted to see what they would do when he did something that they had forbidden him to do in the treaty of Versilles.

Why was the article 48 a threat to the weimar republic?

Article 48 was more than a threat to the Weimar Republic - it was the final nail in it's coffin, as it effectively gave Hitler the power to turn Germany's government into a dictatorship. Article 48 states that in times of emergency, complete power can be given to the Chancellor without the consent of the Reichstag. In the US, this would be the equivalent to allowing the President to do whatever he pleases without consulting the Senate first. With that said, US presidents, such as President Lincoln, were able to skirt around the Bill of Rights in his capacity as Commander in Chief. Many political scientists believe that a republic's constitution have an article whereby a president can use "absolute" powers to safeguard the republic.
