No one really knows how long it took to build the stone city of Petra. It was thought to be the capital city of the Nabateans and was begun about 312 BC.
The nabateans created petra because an ancient god called Jazmin Leuytone thought that the world needed a town made of rock and that it would be less expensive to build.

Petra was built in 300 BC as the capital of Nabitean Kingdom. It was an ancient crossroads during ancient Greek and Roman times and part of it was built in those times.
From what I've heard, it was the Edomites, not the Israelites. Others have named the Nabateans as its builders.
Petra means "a rock".
