After two Plainville women disappeared, police were informed that Gein was asking about the last woman just before her disappearance. He claimed ignorance as to their whereabouts but police grew suspicious. When they went to question Gein at his farmhouse, he wasn't home so the officers walked in to find body parts.

Different approach to the question:

There has been much myths related to the Ed case. It is true that Ed was apprehended when he committed the second crime. As I read the trial scripts I learned that the second woman he killed was named Bernice Worden owner of Worden's hardware and his son was a deputy. Her son knew that Ed passed time looking at his mother in the store and the day he killed her, he bought anti freeze from her and the slips were there when his son entered the place. The cops were sent soon after the victim's son found the scene.

Why did not any body see him. Most of the people were out hunting the first day of the season that year but one man went to the hardware and saw the hardware truck drive out and he was not sure it was his mother driving. He told his son who checked the place right away.

He did make some remarks as the answer above states but People that heard him did not think Ed was was stating true facts.
