First of all, President Lyndon Johnson declined to run again. There were enough anti-war voters to cause some fracturing in the Democrat party; the top candidates were Robert Kennedy and Hubert Humphrey. Kennedy was probably leading to race for the Democrat nomination, but he was assassinated and the nomination went to Vice President Hubert Humphrey. The Republican nominee was Richard Nixon. A third party "spoiler" candidate of the American Independence Party was segregationist George Wallace.

The voting was pretty close; Nixon got 43.4% of the popular vote to Humphreys's 42.7%, although the Electoral College vote was more lopsided; 301 to 191. George Wallace took 13% of the popular vote and 46 electoral college votes.
