Witchcraft is based off of old religion, which focused on Gods and Goddesses. If you look at any ancient religion, such as those of the Egyptians, the Greeks, the Romans, or the Vikings, you will find the basis of Witchcraft in all of them.

Witchcraft also has a lot to do with healing, which comes from all over the world. Witchcraft may use healing energies (which are commonly used in Indian medicine through the Chakras) and the use of herbs for healing, which has been traced back to the beginning of humanity.

Witches don't come from anywhere. Popularly, they don't exist, but the legends still suggest that witches were born in different parts of the world and formed a sisterhood, bringing under their influence, several other potential witches and practicing witch craft. Their existence is a matter of debate and controversy, that gained momentum after the late sixteenth century. Historians are still attempting to solve the mystery surrounding accounts of 'attacks' by witches.

A Pagan Perspective

Paganism, Witchcraft & magic are as old as mankind. Anything, beyond your understanding or comprehension can be considered magic. A cell phone to a primitive is magic.

When mankind first started being self aware, we looked beyond ourselves and needed answers to things like, where does the sun go at night? How do we insure it will come back? How do we heal wounds and illnesses? How do we find food?

Eventually members of the group who discovered things, like which plants helped an upset stomach, where to find water, what the migration patterns of the local animals were and other things, became the ones others turned to for answers. These were the Wise Ones...

The cycles of the seasons where in our blood and instincts, as they governed our survival. The wise ones were the ones who kept track of the right time to plant, and harvest, ensuring the continuance of the people.

As we became more evolved the amount of knowledge expanded, and those with the answers learned a few tricks of their own.

If someone tells you a certain herb will cure your cut, you may or may not believe them, if they are well respected and do a little spell/prayer over the cut at the same time as using the herb, you tend to believe... Particularly if it works... you then tell others of the "power" of the Wise One... Eventually a name gets made, and expectation are raised...

It is a commonly accepted fact that your mind has a strong influence on your body... If you believe in something it has a better chance of working. the Wise Ones figured this out early on, so a little "showmanship" helped their reputation...

As spell/prayers/magic/ became standardized and passed on from generation to generation, the words became of equal importance to the practical application...

Magic became accepted as something that worked...

Science is today what magic once was, a practical, evolving set of standard results from repeated experimentation...

Even modern medicine can't tell us everything the mind is capable of, so some of us still believe in and practice Magic...

In the times of pre-history, when humankind was in its infancy, we were much more primitive in our daily activities and thoughts. Work tended to be broken down into gender specific roles.
Women (and children) did the less dangerous things, such as gathering fruits, nuts, plants, and roots for food, medicine and to use in the creation of baskets and clothing. Learning which plants were good for what use was a full time job and often learned at your mother's knee (figuratively as well as literally). Trial and error was the main way to try new thing and eventually the women had a vast knowledge of plants and herbs. Those with the largest experience (and the best memories), were sought out by others, particularly for healing. Most likely when treating a patient, the healer mumbled to herself, (we often do that when trying to remember important things) and it is human nature to attribute some healing "magic" to those half heard words. Nothing succeeds like success, and as a healer had more of her patients recover, her reputation would grow… A little showmanship, never hurt anything, and eventually, people attributed as much power to the words and gestures as to the herbs used. But this is only half the story…
Men took on the more dangerous job of hunting, Developing skills with tracking, spears, slings, bows and knives takes a lot of practice. No matter how much they practiced, however, there remained an element of luck in hunting. Even the best tracker in the world won't bring home meat for the table if he doesn't run across a trail to track. Once a potential creature has been found, there are still any number of things that can and did go wrong. The wind could shift, a noise could spook the animal, another predator could interfere, a throw could miss, or the animal could get away. Men's magic dealt with the luck of the hunt. Again, a bit of showmanship could go a long way, predicting where herds might be, asking the spirits of the animals to allow themselves to be hunted, dances to help attune the hunters and heighten their desire to do well. Eventually these became ritualistic, and human nature lead us to feel a need for these things in order to ensure a successful out come.
In both cases, those who had the best memories and "track records" of success where the ones sought out for help. These people handed down their extra knowledge, and the bits of theatre to their offspring of apprentices. Eventually these people (the wise ones or witches) became known, revered and sought after for their magic.

Witchcraft goes back thousands of years. The idea that people could kill their supposed enemies by way of magical powers, formed the belief in witches.

How did cats and brooms become associated with witches on Halloween?

Witches of the middle ages were more often than not thought to be women, and a disproportionate number of those condemned as witches were in fact female. Women of the time did the work of running the household and part of that included the cleaning. Brooms were part and parcel of their "equipment" so when looking for "proof" that a woman was a witch, the accusers could point to the broom and say, "There is proof". This dose not mean modern day witches don't use brooms (we call them Bessoms) as part of some of our Rituals. The Bessom is used to ritually cleanse the area we use for our Circle (Sacred space) and as a common part of Hand-fasting Rituals (weddings).
