Jesus was born in a stable or a place that was used to keep animals like donkeys etc. There was a manger in the stable and this was used to put food for the animals, like hay, oats etc. The only way to enter a manger was to crawl into it or have someone lay you in it. The stable on the other hand had a door way and you walked in.
