Buddhists are generally forced to live their lives one day at a time like most folks.
There are sets of suggestions and guidelines on how to do this best (the Eightfold path) but compliance with these guides is left to the individual.
Many people live their lives mired in the past (the what might have beens) or in fear of the future (the what's going to happen nows). Buddhists try to live in a comfortable appreciation of the "now" and leave the past nad the future (which we cannot affect) alone.
With regard to the cataclysmic events in life (both good and bad) a Buddhist tries to accept that these are simply events with no meaning or malice from an angry Universe.

Buddhists apply several principles called the Eightfold Path, the Four Noble Truths, and the Three Gems or Refuges in their everyday lives, in addition to meditation and praying, etcetera. The Eightfold Path consists of, as the name dictates, eight precepts related to being a good overall person. The Eightfold path precepts are as follows:

  • Right beliefs
  • Right aspirations
  • Right speech
  • Right conduct
  • Right livelihood
  • Right effort
  • Right mindfulness
  • Right meditational attainment

The Four Noble Truths are:

  • All of life is marked by suffering
  • Suffering is caused by desire and attachment
  • Suffering can be eliminated
  • Suffering is eliminated by following the Noble Eightfold Path

And the three Gems or Refuges are:

  • The Buddha
  • The Sangha (monastic community)
  • The Dharma (truth or teachings)
