I believe they are an invention that has been designed (by entrepreneurs) to take money of the innocent and unwary aquarists with money to spare. Extra CO2 is not needed ever in a properly set up and well planted tank. The fish should supply ample CO2 and Nitrates through their breathing and excreta etc.
